Three generations, nine cabins, five unhurried days

Updated 27 October 2026

Multigenerational family Komodo boat trip, 5 days, on Elbark Cruises: the whole boat is IDR 200,000,000 (≈ USD 12,270) for up to ten relatives, and nine cabins hold as many as 18. Grandchildren under 3 travel at no charge; at 3 they pay like everyone else. The five days shown are a sample route.

Fourteen relatives paired across seven of the nine cabins

Fourteen relatives make seven pairs, which puts seven of the nine cabins to use and leaves two empty. Take what follows as a shape, not a rule: grandparents in one cabin, a couple in another, four more pairs, and two teenagers sharing the last.

Each cabin has one double bed for two people, so an odd head count needs a word with us. A child shares the double cabin with a parent. Send the ages; the plan and the count come back in writing, and only then is anything paid.

Who fits where is worked out with the family. The oldest want a short walk to breakfast and a bathtub; the youngest want a swim off the stern. The nine cabins differ enough that both can be satisfied.

Fixing the oldest generation's cabin before the rest

Weh is a cabin of 13.6 sqm on the upper deck, with a bathtub, big windows and a rainfall shower. Selayar and Rote on the main deck measure 9.24 sqm, and the lower-deck cabins measure 8.75 sqm. To a grandparent, those extra four square metres and the tub make the difference.

Misool, at 34 sqm, has the private balcony with sofa and jacuzzi; give it to the eldest couple or whoever is hosting. Mentawai is the same type as Weh, so the upper deck holds all three cabins with a bathtub.

Settle the grandparents first, then put parents on the main deck and teenagers and cousins below. That way the family argues once, early, and not on the stairs.

Five days where breakfast is allowed to run late

Five days give a family the one thing a long weekend never does: an afternoon with nothing in it. The sample route runs from Sebayur or Siaba, Taka Makassar and Manta Point on day 1 to Padar and Pink Beach on day 2. Komodo Island, Pengah and Kalong fill day 3, Rinca and Manjarite day 4, and Kelor day 5.

By the later days breakfast runs on. The toddler naps in the cabin while the teenagers take the paddleboard and the canoe. Lunch happens when it happens, and an uncle dozes off on the sundeck.

The days are a sample; the final order is agreed with the captain. Weather has the last say at each stop. All four nights are on board, in a bay the captain chooses each evening.

Stops that can swap places on the day: Manta Point ⇄ Taka Makassar.

Pickup at 08:30 on day 1 is the one fixed hour of an open trip; a private charter's pickup time is set with your date. Every other time on this page is a planning guide, and the captain sets the stop order on the day.

Skip the Padar climb and the day still works

Padar means 25 to 45 minutes uphill on loose, steep ground. Rinca and Komodo are walks with a ranger across dry, hot country. Nobody has to do any of them. A grandparent who sits out Padar keeps the boat, a book and the view, and the others bring back the photographs.

Over five days, missing a climb costs nothing much, because the boat itself is half the point. The captain waits, the ranger sets the trail, and the plan bends to the slowest walker.

Heat is the real limit, more than the slope. Walk early, carry water, wear sturdy shoes, and let the oldest walker set the pace. Turning back halfway is a perfectly good outcome on a five-day trip.

Toddlers free, everyone from age 3 at the full fare

A child aged 0 to 2 costs nothing if a parent or guardian comes too; at 3 the adult fare begins. Whether a baby or toddler needs a bed of its own is a question to settle with us, in writing, ahead of payment.

For cots and child seats, ask us; we promise neither, and whatever can be arranged is confirmed in writing. The safety gear on board is a life raft for twenty-five and life buoys, with no child-sized jackets listed, so mention the children's sizes when you write.

For children who love the water, five days are not too many. A child under six who grows bored of boats does better on four, and the family can make that call once the ages are on the table, well before any deposit.

Fourteen relatives, split by guest count and by day

Five days for fourteen relatives come to IDR 224,000,000 (≈ USD 13,742) for the boat: IDR 200,000,000 (≈ USD 12,270) covers the first ten and the other four add IDR 6,000,000 (≈ USD 368) each. That is IDR 16,000,000 (≈ USD 982) a head, easy for each branch of the family to multiply by its own numbers.

Per day, per head, five days beat three. On three days the same fourteen would pay IDR 11,290,000 (≈ USD 693) each. The total rises with the longer plan; the cost of each day falls.

Park tickets are extra, as are a guide and photo or video documentation. A family booking for 2027 is priced on the current list until a new one is issued.

FAQ

Can grandparents manage a five-day charter?

Yes, as long as the plan bends to them. The upper-deck cabins, Weh, Mentawai and Misool, have the most room, and the main deck sits a few steps from the dining room. Padar and Rinca are optional, and the captain and the ranger judge each day as it comes.

At what age do children pay?

From 3. Before that birthday a child is free in a parent's or guardian's care. After it, the child pays the full fare and counts as a guest. Give us every age, and the cabin plan and count are confirmed in writing before you pay.

Can a child sleep in a parent's cabin?

Yes. Each cabin is a double for two, so one parent and one child can share, and a family of four uses two cabins. The plan is confirmed in writing. For cots and child seats, ask us.

Is the boat safe for small children?

The safety gear is a life raft rated for twenty-five, life buoys, a flare gun and a fire extinguisher. No child-sized life jackets or child seats are listed, so ask us before you book. On deck, keep small children within an adult's reach at all times.

Can grandparents skip the Padar climb?

Yes. The path up to the main viewpoint is loose and steep, takes 25 to 45 minutes, and is entirely optional. Whoever stays aboard has the sundeck and the bay to themselves while the others walk. Nobody is asked to climb.
