Before you fly: the facts a long charter depends on
Updated 27 October 2026
A first trip to Indonesia for an Elbark Cruises charter needs three things sorted: a visa (on arrival or e-visa for most visitors), a flight to Komodo Airport by way of Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya, and some cash for the islands. Anything not confirmed is marked verify before travelling.
Entering Indonesia: visa on arrival and e-visa
Most visitors need a visa, and most of them can have it on arrival or online beforehand. The online route is the e-visa, applied for on the immigration department's own portal, and it saves time at the counter. Use that portal only. Third-party sites charge extra for the same document.
Below, the table shows the fee, the length of stay and the passport rules as last checked. Your passport needs to be valid for six months after arrival and carry blank pages, and the officer asks to see a ticket out of the country. A digital arrival card is also required before you land, and the official one is free.
The fee is the fact that moves. A rise has been reported, and its start date is not confirmed, so the table marks the fee as verify before travelling. Check the portal for your nationality a week before you fly, and keep a printed copy of every approval.
| Visa on Arrival (VoA) | Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. |
|---|---|
| e-VoA | The same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days. |
| VoA / e-VoA price | IDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly. |
| Length of stay | 30 days from the day you arrive, single entry |
| Extension | Once, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end. |
| Visa-free entry | 30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages |
| Onward ticket | Proof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA |
| All Indonesia arrival card | Free and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration. |
| Arriving in Labuan Bajo | Most visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight |
| Bali tourist levy | IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee. |

Flying into Komodo Airport
Labuan Bajo has its own airport, Komodo Airport, with the code LBJ. Connections run mostly through Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya, with a few smaller airports feeding in. Harbour and airport lie a short drive apart, which means an afternoon landing still gets you to a hotel before dinner.
Airlines and routes are in the table, as last checked. Timetables change with the season, so confirm yours when you book the seats. Direct flights from outside Indonesia are limited, and the table marks them verify before travelling.
For a long charter, land the day before the pickup. Plan a flight home after 14:00 on the final day; the boat docks in the late morning. If you arrive through Bali, check the separate tourist levy there, which is not part of any visa fee.
| Airport | Komodo International Airport, code LBJ |
|---|---|
| Usual connections | Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB); Lombok and Kupang are smaller feeders |
| Flight time to Labuan Bajo | From Bali about 1 h 10 min to 1 h 20 min; from Surabaya about 1 h 30 min; from Jakarta 2 h 30 min to 3 h; from Lombok about 1 h |
| Airlines | Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia from Bali and Jakarta; Super Air Jet from Surabaya; Wings Air on the shorter island routes. Schedules change, so check before you book. |
| Airport to the harbour | 2 to 3 km, about 10 minutes by car |

Cards, cash machines and tipping
Indonesia pays in rupiah. Cash machines stand in Labuan Bajo near the harbour and at the airport, and there are none on the islands or inside the park. Draw cash in town before you sail. Cards work at hotels, larger restaurants and the booking team's payment link, and a small surcharge can apply.
On board you need little money. The meals, the snacks, the coffee, the tea and the water are in the fare, as are the snorkelling gear, the paddleboard and the canoe. Park tickets, alcohol and personal expenses are not, and you pay them separately.
Tipping is appreciated and never compulsory. The table shows the going range for the crew and for the rangers, marked verify before travelling. We set no tip.
| Currency | Indonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026 |
|---|---|
| ATMs | BCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board. |
| ATM limits | IDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges |
| Cards or cash | Cards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash. |
| Tipping | Appreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range. |

Heat, health and water
Buy travel insurance that includes medical cover and evacuation. It is not in the fare, and for a party of mixed ages it is the one purchase to make before everything else. Hold a policy in each guest's name, and read it for snorkelling and walking.
The sun is the daily risk. Pack a hat, sunscreen that suits a reef and a bottle each. Mosquitoes carry illness in this region; bring repellent and wear long sleeves around dusk. Do not drink from the tap on land or in the hotel; stick to sealed or filtered water.
Labuan Bajo has private and public hospitals, and serious cases are flown out. For vaccinations, speak to your own travel clinic, which knows your history. The table lists the facts we hold, and marks which ones to verify.
| Insurance | Travel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive |
|---|---|
| Private hospital | Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, Jl. Gabriel Gampur, +62 385 2440 666; it has a hyperbaric chamber |
| Public hospital | RSUD Komodo, Labuan Bajo, with an emergency unit; no hyperbaric chamber |
| Pharmacies | Available in town with a limited range; bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home |
| Emergency numbers | 112 general; 118 or 119 medical; 110 police; 115 search and rescue |
| Health risks | Dengue, chikungunya and malaria are present, so protect yourself against mosquito bites. Rabies exists in dogs and monkeys: seek care at once after a bite. |

FAQ
Do I need a visa?
Most visitors do. Visitors choose between a visa bought on arrival and an e-visa applied for online ahead of the flight, via the immigration department's own portal. Citizens of some neighbouring countries enter without one. The table marks the fee verify before travelling, so check the portal for your passport.
Which airport do I fly to?
Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, code LBJ. Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya are the usual connecting airports. Only a short drive separates the airport from the harbour, and the pickup happens at your hotel or any spot in the city area. Land the day before the sailing.
Is there an ATM in Labuan Bajo?
Yes. ATMs are found in town by the harbour and at the airport; the islands and the park have none. Withdraw before you board, since park tickets and any tips are paid separately. Hotels and bigger restaurants take cards, occasionally adding a surcharge.
What vaccines do I need?
We cannot give a list, and we do not guess at one. Ask your own travel clinic, which knows your history and your route. The health table shows the risks we hold on file, including mosquito-borne illness and rabies, and marks what to verify before you travel.
