The Padar climb, taken at the pace of the slowest walker

Updated 27 October 2026

A large family or group walking Padar from the boat should plan on 25 to 45 minutes of uphill walking before the main viewpoint, which overlooks three bays. On Elbark Cruises the five-day sample puts Padar on day two, with the sun up at 06:18 in July, so the slowest walker sets the pace.

Up the Padar ridge, section by section

The boat anchors, the tender takes the party ashore, and the path begins low and loose. The first section is the steepest. Stone steps and dry earth alternate, and the ridge offers no shade. Parts of the path slide underfoot, which is why shoes matter.

A climb of 25 to 45 minutes brings you to the main viewpoint. The upper ridge takes longer, for those who want it. At the main viewpoint the island spreads out around three bays, and every bay has its own sand colour. Padar brings neither dragons nor a beach stop; the walk is the point. The reason to come is the ridge and the view.

On the standard three-day route Padar is the last stop of day one, after Manta Point. On the five-day sample it moves to day two and shares the day with Pink Beach, which gives the climb a morning to itself.

Sunrise on the second day

Day two of a five-day charter has no fixed hour. That is the day off the clock, and it is the best use of a long charter on Padar. The captain settles the evening before when the boat repositions, and sunrise walkers step off an hour ahead of the sun, headtorch in hand.

The sun is up at 06:18 in July, at 05:31 in November and at 05:38 in December. The table lists every month. Because the start moves through the year, the plan for the morning depends on the month you book.

A short trip must take Padar whenever the schedule says. A long one can wait. If the ridge is grey on the second morning, the captain can try again on the third. We promise no clear sunrise. We promise the time to wait for one.

Climbers, and those who wait on the beach

Nobody has to climb. Really. A party of fourteen, three generations, splits naturally: the teenagers go first and fast, the adults in the middle, and a grandfather or a toddler stays behind at the foot with someone to keep them company. Everyone has had the island, whichever part of it they chose.

Those who wait have shade aboard, the sea to swim in and the deck to sit on. The tender takes them back whenever they want. The walkers return with the view and a story, and no one has to feel they held the party back.

Tell us the ages and the health needs of the party when you write. We cannot judge a climb from a distance, and we do not pretend to. The captain and the crew on the day know the path, and the choice stays with each walker. The park ticket is paid separately, at IDR 250,000 for a foreign guest.

Footwear, headwear and bottles for the ridge

Wear shoes with grip. Trainers with a good sole are enough, and sandals are not. The loose parts of the path are where ankles are turned.

Wear a hat with a brim and sunscreen that suits a reef, because the ridge has no shade. Carry a bottle of water each, and a light shirt for the cool of the first hour. A headtorch helps before sunrise, and your phone is a poor substitute.

Carry little. A camera strap that crosses the body leaves both hands free on the steep sections. Leave bags on the boat. Bring only what you will want on the ridge.

FAQ

How long is the Padar climb?

The upper ridge costs extra time on top of the 25 to 45 minutes it takes to get up to the main viewpoint. Loose stones and steep sections mark the path, and no tree gives shade. A sunrise climb is the party's choice; the captain fixes the start, and walkers step off the boat an hour before the sun comes up.

Can children climb Padar?

Children who walk steadily can, with an adult beside them. Expect loose stones, steep sections and no shade on the path. Tell us the ages when you write. Children from 0 to 2 are free; at 3 and above the full fare is charged. The choice on the day is the parent's.

Can we skip Padar?

Yes. Nobody has to climb, and the stop works for those who wait aboard or on the shore. On a long charter the day still has a swim and a lunch. A party that skips the climb pays the same fare, since the charter is priced for the whole boat.

What shoes do we need?

Shoes with grip, such as trainers with a good sole. Sandals slip on the loose, steep stretches of the path. Closed shoes also protect against the dry, rough ground. Pack a hat, sunscreen and a bottle of water to go with them.
