Banda Neira and Savu: the lowest fare on the boat

Banda Neira and Savu are the two lowest fares on Elbark Cruises, at IDR 6,500,000 (≈ USD 399) per person for 3 days, with 2 sharing. Both are on the lower deck at 8.75 sqm. Every cabin comes with a double bed, air conditioning and its own bathroom, fitted with a rainfall shower and hot water, plus a small round porthole in the hull.

Banda Neira is named after the small island at the centre of the Banda Islands, known for its nutmeg history. The cabin looks out over Komodo water. Savu is named after Savu island in East Nusa Tenggara, between Sumba and Rote, and its fare is the same.

Neither cabin is listed with a desk, and the photographs show the Savu cabin and stand in for Banda Neira, as the two are the same type. These are the smallest cabins on the boat. Nothing else about the trip changes: you eat, snorkel and walk with everybody else.

Toraja and Alor, one step up

Toraja and Alor cost IDR 7,000,000 (≈ USD 429) per person. They are on the same lower deck and the same size, 8.75 sqm, with the same small round marine window. The difference is a work desk, which these two cabins have and the lowest pair are not listed with.

Toraja is named after the highlands of South Sulawesi, a highland region and not an island. Alor takes its name from the island in the Alor archipelago, north of Timor. Both names belong to the cabin, and the boat does not sail to either place.

Above them come Selayar and Rote on the main deck at IDR 8,350,000 (≈ USD 512). They are 9.24 sqm, with ocean-view windows, a work desk and a position beside the dining room. If a guest wants daylight in the cabin and not only a porthole, that is the first fare that buys it. For a guest who only sleeps in the cabin, the lower pair is enough.

Inside the cabin fare, and added to it

Inside the fare: the cabin, onboard meals, snacks and drinks, and free-flow coffee, tea and water. Snorkelling gear, the paddleboard, the canoe and movie and karaoke entertainment are in it too. So are local Wi-Fi, the cruise director guide, the photographer, and the pickup and drop-off in the city area. A personal tumbler goes home with you.

The park ticket comes on top: IDR 250,000 for a foreign guest, and for a domestic guest IDR 50,000 on weekdays or IDR 75,000 at weekends. Flights, travel insurance and personal expenses are also yours to pay, and alcohol is excluded from the fare.

A true budget adds these lines together, with a hotel night before the pickup. The cabin fare is the biggest line, and the rest decide whether it was the cheapest way. We quote no total you cannot check against the table.

Eighteen friends: hiring the boat or buying nine cabins

Eighteen friends can do either, and the arithmetic is worth a minute. A charter for 18 is IDR 176,000,000 (≈ USD 10,798), which is IDR 9,780,000 (≈ USD 600) each. The nine cabin fares for 18 guests add up to less than the whole boat for three days.

The cabins win on price only under conditions. All nine must be free on a listed Friday or Monday, and a shared trip leaves for 3 days only. The whole boat has no such limits. It sails for 4, 5 or 6 days, on any day of the week, in an order of stops you set, with no other guests aboard.

Per head, the boat never drops below the cheaper cabins. At 18 guests it is IDR 9,780,000 (≈ USD 600) each, against IDR 9,350,000 (≈ USD 574) for Weh. If price is the only test, buy the cabins. If the party needs one boat to itself, or a fourth day, hire the boat and accept the difference.

When saving money costs you time

The lowest fare asks for three days and a date from the calendar. It asks you to take the standard route as it is, on a boat shared with other guests. On day one come Sebayur or Siaba, Taka Makassar, Manta Point and Padar. Day two brings Pink Beach, Komodo, Pengah and Kalong, and day three ends with Kelor and Manjarite. A group that cannot meet those terms pays in other ways.

Time is the first cost. A long charter cannot be bought by the cabin, so a family that wants five days must hire the whole boat. Date is the second. The cheapest cabins on a Friday that is flagged go first, and a guest who waits finds the fare gone.

The third cost is comfort. The lowest cabins are the smallest, and their only light is a small round window. That suits a guest who spends the day on deck. It does not suit someone who wants a morning in the cabin. Choose with that in mind.

FAQ

Yes, a small round marine window in the hull. The four lower-deck cabins, Toraja, Alor, Banda Neira and Savu, each have one. They are 8.75 sqm, fitted with a double bed, air conditioning and a private bathroom. Selayar and Rote on the main deck have larger windows.
